Represent: A Brief History of Self-Representation by African-American Artists

7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Event Details

Beginning around the turn of the 20th Century, African-American artists began making art intended to celebrate African and African-American history and culture, an art meant to counter the racist stereotypes that dominated (and often still dominate) American mainstream culture. This illustrated presentation by David Lusenhop highlights the work of artists from the Harlem Renaissance until today whose mission was, and is, to reclaim and reimagine the Black body and the Black image. Mr. Lusenhop is an independent scholar, art collector and art dealer specializing in aspects of African-American art history.
