Trumpeter-Composer-Bandleader John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie is one of the most significant figures in 20th century American music. On October 11 the noted author and jazz historian Dr. Mark Gridley will visit the Shaker Heights Public Library to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of Gillespie’s birth. With the help of many exciting recordings, Dr. Gridley will trace the origins and highlights of Gillespie’s innovative style. The presentation will show how the astounding trumpeter helped launch modern jazz and craft the style whose name he coined: bebop.
